Depression can present in many ways, and it can make you feel extremely low and sad. If you have at least four of the symptoms below (in particular 1, 2, 6 and 9) and they have persisted for several days over a period of two weeks, it is possible that you are suffering from depression.

That is a really useful check list and I am sad to say that I found myself to be a classic depressed person.¬† That is very worrying to me because my granadmother suffered terribly from depression in later life and I hate to think I might be going the same way.¬† I am usually a very positive and optimistic person but over the past five years it seems that¬† everything has gone downhill for me.¬† First my father was takaen ill and then¬† died.¬† Two weeks before that I caught my husband cheating and threw him out (he ahd already been dismissed from his senior management position¬† for sexual harrassment.)¬† I lost my home and had to move.¬† Last year my dog died at age 12.¬† All of this has left me feeling very low.¬† I just feel I can’t bounce back anymore, that anytime I get on my feet somethinng else is going to come along and knock me down.¬† So now I just stay down.¬†

I really feel for you.  I have had depression in the past and it can be very draining.  One thing I did want to ask was if you feel this worse in the dark winter months in the UK in which case it might be something to do with SAD (seasonal affective disorder)?  I can see you have had  a rough time and it is not surprising that you have reacted to that, maybe you need not to expect too much from yourself and give yourself time to heal.

I am sorry to hear about this depression.  Have you seen your doctor?  I know that everyone worries about addiction to antidepressants etc but sometimes a short course can help.  In any case seeing your doctor would be a good frist step I think.  Please let us know how you get on.
